SL: Sally, Steve and Teresa meet at Muvenation

Module 1, Section 3, Activity 1 – Exploring educational places

I just had a wonderful and productive work meeting with Sally Griffin / Boudica Jarvinen and Steve Griffin / Bascule Twine at Muvenation. We belong to subgroup 2.5 (blue) and had only interacted through the Moodle thread.

We met by chance at SL today and decided to work on the following topic: “look for good examples of teaching, from any subject area… so new teachers could get an idea of how it can be done” (Sally’s idea). Then we agreed on the following search words/expressions: best practices, interactive learning, problem solving, creative thinking. This way we’ll try to be consistent in our results. Finally, we agreed that we’d each search in our subject area.

Steve and I will meet at Muvenation at 17:00 GMT this afternoon to report on findings and problems.

Here’s the chatlog (for the record).

[4:54]  IM: Bascule Twine: Hi Tere – Sally and I are at MUVEnation island.  Are you free to come over?
[4:56]  Teleport completed from http://slurl.com/secondlife/VIRTLANTIS/202/62/21
[4:56]  Connecting to in-world Voice Chat…
[4:56]  Connected
[4:57]  Boudica Jarvinen: Hi Tere we’re over by the fire
[4:57]  Boudica Jarvinen: Follow me?
[4:58]  Boudica Jarvinen: Hi Tere
[4:58]  No room to sit here, try another spot.
[4:58]  Bascule Twine: Hi Tere
[4:59]  Tere Short: hi steve
[4:59]  Tere Short: near the fire. nice!
[4:59]  No room to sit here, try another spot.
[4:59]  Boudica Jarvinen: Steve is checking to see if any of our Blue Group have added anything on the moddle site
[4:59]  Boudica Jarvinen: moodle
[5:00]  Boudica Jarvinen: haha
[5:00]  Boudica Jarvinen: my typing i always go too fast
[5:00]  Tere Short: lucky you! i typle slow
[5:00]  Boudica Jarvinen: Steve says noone else has added anything yet
[5:00]  Tere Short: that’s what i thought
[5:00]  Tere Short: sally, i like your idea for our collaborative task
[5:01]  Bascule Twine: No… no other group members have signed in yet
[5:01]  Boudica Jarvinen: cool
[5:01]  Bascule Twine: :-(
[5:01]  Boudica Jarvinen: I ‘m not sure how we’ll find them though
[5:01]  Tere Short: i think that we could agree on search words and expressions
[5:01]  Boudica Jarvinen: yes that’s a good idea
[5:02]  Bascule Twine: Do you have some ideas Tere?
[5:02]  Tere Short: best practices could be one of them
[5:02]  Bascule Twine: sounds good
[5:02]  Tere Short: that’s been a buzz expression!
[5:02]  Tere Short: and maybe we could add the subject: english, science, math…
[5:02]  Boudica Jarvinen: and interactive learning?
[5:02]  Boudica Jarvinen: problem solving
[5:03]  Bascule Twine: Searchign in-world might be quite hard – so Google and other sites?
[5:03]  Boudica Jarvinen: creative thinking
[5:03]  Tere Short: definitely
[5:03]  Bascule Twine: Can we log this chat?
[5:03]  Bascule Twine: Or at least take a copy?
[5:03]  Tere Short: we could try slbrowser, suggested in the sec3 file
[5:03]  Boudica Jarvinen: I’m fine with that
[5:03]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:03]  Bascule Twine: I’ll find out about that
[5:03]  Tere Short: just a sec. phone
[5:03]  Boudica Jarvinen: are you ok to copy this chat Tere?
[5:04]  Tere Short: i’ll have to check on that
[5:05]  Tere Short: let me chaeck about the chat log
[5:06]  Bascule Twine: Do you know if there’s a way of recording chat automatically? I guess we can just cut and past into Word…
[5:06]  Bascule Twine: I know a group of people who record chat at meetings
[5:06]  Boudica Jarvinen: Could we paste it into our wiki?
[5:06]  Bascule Twine: and I know Sloodle can do it
[5:07]  Tere Short: let me tell you how, though i haven’t found the place where it’s stored
[5:07]  Bascule Twine: OK
[5:07]  Tere Short: preferences
[5:07]  Tere Short: communication
[5:07]  Tere Short: click Edit (menu)
[5:07]  Bascule Twine: yup
[5:08]  Tere Short: logging options
[5:08]  Bascule Twine: Somewhere on the hard drive?
[5:08]  Bascule Twine: :-)
[5:08]  Tere Short: check all
[5:08]  Bascule Twine: OK…
[5:08]  Bascule Twine: Where does it save I wonder?
[5:08]  Tere Short: i tried to find it the other day, even did a search in my hard drive, but in vain
[5:08]  Bascule Twine: I’ll take a look…
[5:08]  Tere Short: i think it’s best if we copy-paste it somewhere
[5:10]  Tere Short: i’ve just saved the chat so far in notepad
[5:11]  Tere Short: i did Ctrl A, Ctrl C and Ctrl V in notepad.
[5:11]  Boudica Jarvinen: I’ will cut and paste into word at the end I think
[5:12]  Bascule Twine: I looked on my hard drive, but didn’t find anything… maybe the options have to be set before the start…
[5:12]  Bascule Twine: Let’s get back to our seach terms – do we ahve enough?
[5:12]  Bascule Twine: Maybe it record automatically in future
[5:12]  Bascule Twine: (have)
[5:13]  Tere Short: i confirmed some days ago that copying to notepad is the best, bec if we want to paste the doc in a blog, for example, it doesn’t mix up formats
[5:13]  Bascule Twine: Good plan!
[5:13]  Bascule Twine: OK – they’ll be in the chat log
[5:13]  Tere Short: do you think that we could each search in a specific subject area, or in general?
[5:13]  SusNy Foss is Online
[5:13]  Tere Short: steve, i think we have enough search words/expressions
[5:13]  Boudica Jarvinen: we could start with googling?
[5:14]  Boudica Jarvinen: shall we take different expressions each?
[5:14]  Boudica Jarvinen: we could do differetn subjects
[5:14]  Bascule Twine: Might be easier to all take all expressions and see what comes up
[5:14]  Boudica Jarvinen: so we end up with a range
[5:14]  Boudica Jarvinen: i supect we wont fiind that much anyway?
[5:14]  Bascule Twine: might not be much out there!
[5:14]  Boudica Jarvinen: maybe I’m being pessimistic!
[5:14]  Tere Short: if we do diff subjects, i think we could all use the same searc expressions for consistency. agree?
[5:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: yes
[5:15]  anna Begonia is Offline
[5:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: agree Tere
[5:15]  Tere Short: well, we have to come up with two landmarks, i think
[5:15]  Bascule Twine: Yes… sounds good
[5:15]  Bascule Twine: We can explain what we’re doing through the Group 2 Blue thread and invite the others to join us
[5:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: yes and create a wiwki of information about them
[5:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: wiki
[5:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: i think
[5:16]  Tere Short: absolutely, sally and steve
[5:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: so how do we create a Blue Group Wiki?
[5:16]  Bascule Twine: I think it’s already done for us
[5:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:16]  Bascule Twine: Sheila did it
[5:16]  Tere Short: no, it should be reported in our own wiki, if i remember well
[5:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: I only got as far as registering for the wiki
[5:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: i havne’t checked my email yet
[5:16]  Bascule Twine: OK
[5:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: to see if the log in is there
[5:16]  Tere Short: we should also report in less detail in the group moodle thread.
[5:17]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:17]  Bascule Twine: We can take a look on the Moodle site and clarify
[5:17]  Tere Short: yes
[5:17]  Boudica Jarvinen: Do you mean the Blue group wiki Tere?
[5:17]  Boudica Jarvinen: have you found it?
[5:17]  Tere Short: no, i meqan our individual wikis
[5:18]  Boudica Jarvinen: i thought a wiki was a group document
[5:18]  Boudica Jarvinen: individual…wouldn’t that be a blog
[5:18]  Boudica Jarvinen: I’ve never used one before
[5:18]  IM: SusNy Foss: Hello Tere
[5:18]  Boudica Jarvinen: a wiki that is
[5:18]  Tere Short: we all should have a wiki page in the mvn08 wiki
[5:18]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:18]  Tere Short: just a sec. let me try to help you
[5:18]  IM: SusNy Foss: where can I find you?
[5:19]  Tere Short: http://mvn08.pbwiki.com/Teresa_Almeida_d%27Eca
[5:19]  Tere Short: this is my wiki page in the mvn08 wiki
[5:20]  Tere Short: sus, we’re in muvenation working on our group project
[5:21]  Tere Short: sally and steve, let’s just confirm our serch expressions, all right? i’ll paste them here
[5:21]  Bascule Twine: OK Tere
[5:22]  Tere Short: best practices, interactive learning, problem solving, creative thinking
[5:22]  Bascule Twine: Tere – will you summarise our conversation for the Group 2 Blue thread?
[5:22]  Tere Short: and the name of the subject
[5:22]  Boudica Jarvinen: I just left a test comment on your wiki and it seems to have accepted it without me logging on!
[5:22]  Boudica Jarvinen: Teresa can you see the comment too?
[5:22]  Tere Short: will do, steve
[5:22]  Tere Short: what comment, sally?
[5:22]  Boudica Jarvinen: thanks Tere
[5:22]  Bascule Twine: Where shall we put the rocord of this chat?
[5:23]  Tere Short: just a sec, sally
[5:23]  Boudica Jarvinen: it just says I’m testing to see if it works
[5:23]  Bascule Twine: Shall I sort that out?
[5:23]  Tere Short: i see the comment, sally. great!
[5:23]  Boudica Jarvinen: it works!
[5:24]  Tere Short: steve, i think each of us can save it and maybe paste it in our wiki or blog. not sure
[5:24]  Bascule Twine: OK
[5:24]  Boudica Jarvinen: also Anna said in the tutorials that we have to agree not to quote from recorded chat without the whole context copied
[5:24]  Tere Short: yes, sally, it works! :-)
[5:24]  Boudica Jarvinen: I think we were all there so have i got that right?
[5:25]  Bascule Twine: If you both agree we can each put the full text inot our blogs? Or at least a link to the full text?
[5:25]  Boudica Jarvinen: the day of the snowballs ha ha
[5:25]  Bascule Twine: I remember
[5:25]  Boudica Jarvinen: that’s fine
[5:25]  Boudica Jarvinen: by me
[5:26]  Tere Short: yes, i think so. you mean that we need to copy only the relevant context, not the whole chat, right?
[5:26]  Tere Short: the snowball fight was lots of fun
[5:26]  Boudica Jarvinen: I thinnk as long as the context is there and we link to the copy of the whole chat that’s fine?
[5:26]  Tere Short: i agree about the chatlog in the blog, steve
[5:26]  Bascule Twine: Anna said it was polite to have the whole text available somewhere if you’re quoting part of it – so that people could check the context
[5:26]  Tere Short: yes, sally
[5:27]  Boudica Jarvinen: that all sounds fine to me
[5:27]  Tere Short: right. being a webhead, we’ve never had that problem. we can quote from any source – everything is public – as long as we give credit to the author
[5:28]  Tere Short: and there’s never been a problem in almost 7 years
[5:28]  Bascule Twine: Shall we spend a couple of days investigating and try to get together agin med-week – to see what we’ve found?
[5:28]  Bascule Twine: we can post in the meantime
[5:28]  SusNy Foss is Offline
[5:29]  SusNy Foss is Online
[5:29]  Boudica Jarvinen: I am working away from home a couple fo days but I’ll do what I can
[5:29]  Tere Short: steve, i was going to suggest we get together later this evening just to report on any findings we may have, bec if we have problems, then we can sort them out sooner rather than later. is that ok with you both?
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: good idea
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: i may be on the road by then
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: so apolgie
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: s
[5:30]  Tere Short: sally, then i suggest we report on the blue group thread if we have problems
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: thanks
[5:31]  Tere Short: no problem, sally. we all have priorities
[5:31]  Bascule Twine: Tere – I’ll cojntact you later with details of anythuing I think is interesting
[5:31]  Tere Short: my priority is lying in bed with my fractured kneecap till tuesday
[5:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: oh dear
[5:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: you poor thing
[5:31]  Bascule Twine: Sorry – typing is a bit erratic..>!!!
[5:31]  Tere Short: i’ll do the same, steve
[5:31]  Bascule Twine: OK – we have a plan!
[5:31]  Tere Short: i’ve been in bed for 7 weeks
[5:31]  Tere Short: but no pain
[5:32]  Boudica Jarvinen: I am stillw aiting for deatilas fo where I have to be when this week so may be here
[5:32]  Bascule Twine: I saw in your blog that you broke your leg
[5:32]  Boudica Jarvinen: 7 weeks in bed
[5:32]  Boudica Jarvinen: you must be going crazy!
[5:32]  Bascule Twine: How is it now?
[5:32]  Tere Short: steve, if you’re home, maybe we could meet here this evening. is that ok with you?
[5:32]  Bascule Twine: That’s fine
[5:32]  Bascule Twine: Are you up and about?
[5:32]  Tere Short: i’m not going crazy bec the computer and the course keep me busy :-)
[5:33]  Boudica Jarvinen: yes at least you can still fly in SL!
[5:33]  Tere Short: i just walk to the bathroom. i need to be immobilized as much as possible to avoid surgery
[5:33]  Tere Short: lol sally. aboslutely right :-)
[5:33]  Boudica Jarvinen: we wont copy these bits into the log of chat ha ha
[5:33]  Tere Short: ok
[5:33]  Tere Short: ~maybe i will in mine. they’re part of RL
[5:34]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[5:34]  Boudica Jarvinen: if you’re ok with that
[5:34]  Tere Short: steve. what time could you meet this evening?
[5:35]  Bascule Twine: OK – I’m going to go and do some searching
[5:35]  Bascule Twine: Thanks Tere…
[5:35]  Bascule Twine: What time shall we try an meet?
[5:35]  Tere Short: me too. but should we meet here this evening, steve?
[5:35]  Tere Short: if so, what time?
[5:36]  Bascule Twine: OK – how about 5.00pm GMT?
[5:36]  Tere Short: fine with me
[5:37]  Tere Short: i’ll get on with searches and report to thr group in moodle later on
[5:37]  Bascule Twine: See you then!
[5:37]  Tere Short: bye!
[5:37]  Tere Short: thank you both!
[5:37]  Bascule Twine: You too
[5:37]  Boudica Jarvinen: bye tere
[5:37]  Boudica Jarvinen: thanks for that
[5:37]  Tere Short: bye sally
[5:38]  Bascule Twine is Offline

Sally (she was able to make it), Steve and I met again at 17:00 to report on our findings: the links we’d found and the places we’d been to. I had bookmarked several SLBrowser and Google links and included a couple of links that I plan to explore in my wiki. We agreed on what each of us is going to explore and will then report our findings.

Here’s the chatlog.

[9:10]  Tere Short: did you use the search words we thought of?
[9:11]  Boudica Jarvinen: I found some things on youtube under Best Practice
[9:11]  Tere Short: i wasn’t successful with them in my searches
[9:11]  Boudica Jarvinen: there was a conference called “Best Practices using SL at the Virtual World Conference LA Sept 2008 Conference
[9:11]  Tere Short: here’s what i found that i think is worth looking into
[9:11]  Tere Short: http://mvn08.pbwiki.com/Teresa_Almeida_d%27Eca
[9:12]  Tere Short: that sounds very interesting!
[9:12]  Boudica Jarvinen: It was on Youtube about 45mins of talking
[9:12]  Boudica Jarvinen: but i made notes
[9:12]  Boudica Jarvinen: and there was Global Kids
[9:13]  Boudica Jarvinen: who hav dine some great Machinima projects looking at Glocal issues
[9:13]  Boudica Jarvinen: have done
[9:13]  Tere Short: i see
[9:14]  Tere Short: i came upon a global kids (i think) slideshow, but the slides were all out of order. very confusing! but the content seemed interesting
[9:15]  Boudica Jarvinen: The products were good like the CONSENT game and the “A Child’s War” video
[9:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: using machinima
[9:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: produced by learners
[9:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: I’ve put some of the notes and links into the wiki
[9:16]  Boudica Jarvinen: Lots of notes are handwritten from the video so I have to write them up
[9:17]  Boudica Jarvinen: I think it’s going to be hard to find anything to view in action for me as it’s mainly in Teen SL
[9:19]  Tere Short: this is the slideshow i was talking about
[9:19]  Tere Short: http://flickr.com/photos/holymeatballs/sets/72157601198270790
[9:19]  Boudica Jarvinen: Yes I think I looked at all those
[9:19]  Tere Short: welcome, steve!
[9:19]  Bascule Twine: Sorry I’m late
[9:19]  Tere Short: not at all
[9:20]  Bascule Twine: I’ve had an interesting time
[9:21]  Bascule Twine: I didn’t get beyong “best practice”
[9:21]  Boudica Jarvinen: I took some photo
[9:21]  Bascule Twine: A lot of stuff came up
[9:21]  Bascule Twine: I’ve been looking at a few
[9:21]  Tere Short: i’ve told sally that i’m not really happy with my results outside of SL: SLBrowser and Google
[9:22]  Bascule Twine: and it takes a while to discover what’s good and what’s not
[9:22]  Bascule Twine: Tere – I got no further than Google
[9:22]  Bascule Twine: What else did you try?
[9:23]  Tere Short: i tried SL browser – suggested in the section 3 file – but i didn’t like it
[9:23]  Tere Short: i need to try searching in SL
[9:23]  Bascule Twine: I tried it at the start of the course, but don’t see any advantage over Explorer of Firefox
[9:23]  Tere Short: we needn’t take up too long bec. we only need to explore 2 sites
[9:24]  Bascule Twine: Infact, it’s not as good as either
[9:24]  Tere Short: i agree
[9:24]  Boudica Jarvinen: I will have to report on Global Kids’ sites based on the Youtube stuff I think
[9:24]  Tere Short: great, sally
[9:24]  Boudica Jarvinen: as I can’t get in there
[9:25]  Boudica Jarvinen: I have access to Teen SL for a private island I’m developing
[9:25]  Boudica Jarvinen: but you can’t get to other bits
[9:25]  Bascule Twine: There’s a problem with not being able to get into Teen SL
[9:25]  Tere Short: and i will try to report on a BC teen group to learn english. it sounds like fun
[9:25]  Bascule Twine: Or at least having very limited access
[9:26]  Boudica Jarvinen: Yes we saw the British Council one that looks good
[9:26]  Bascule Twine: I found a report on the British Council island – but of courser can’t get to see it…
[9:26]  Bascule Twine: Difficult!
[9:27]  Tere Short: i saw a presentation by graham stanley that is very motivating
[9:27]  Bascule Twine: Utube?
[9:27]  Boudica Jarvinen: where was that?
[9:27]  Tere Short: let me check
[9:27]  Tere Short: yes
[9:29]  Bascule Twine: So… we choose two sites each and write them up?
[9:29]  Tere Short: and then i’m going to report based on the items in step 6 of the activity 1 file
[9:29]  Tere Short: yes. i believe so
[9:29]  anna Begonia is Offline
[9:30]  Bascule Twine: I’m going to look at the MUVEnation site again to see what’s next…
[9:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: Ok well I have Education UK and Global Kids?
[9:30]  Boudica Jarvinen: or could do Sloodle site
[9:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: since we went to a practical session there
[9:31]  Bascule Twine: My discovered places – Fill out the database with the following information: name of the place, SLURL, photo and link to Flickr, link to the personal blog in which the place is described
[9:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: but I can’t do all that is required for Teen SL sites
[9:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: Might have to adapt the requirements
[9:31]  Bascule Twine: So this is the next step
[9:31]  Boudica Jarvinen: to link to Youtube
[9:32]  Bascule Twine: Then we have to produce a travel guide
[9:32]  Bascule Twine: Highlighting a couple of the places
[9:32]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[9:32]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[9:33]  Bascule Twine: The travel guide is built up in our collective wiki
[9:35]  Tere Short: i’d like to explore edunation – i have a nice tour of edun II – and maybe i’ll explore another site where i was at two weeks ago
[9:35]  Tere Short: sally, you keep the Teen SL from the BCouncil, right?
[9:36]  Bascule Twine: I think I’m going to look at Virtual Morocco
[9:36]  Bascule Twine: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Casablanca/135/87/27
[9:36]  Bascule Twine: And UK education Island
[9:37]  Boudica Jarvinen: YOu van do BC if you like Tere
[9:37]  Boudica Jarvinen: you can
[9:37]  Tere Short: are you sure? no problem on my part
[9:37]  Bascule Twine: Education UK Island, Education UK (238, 44, 22)
[9:38]  Bascule Twine: Sally – you could do Education UK as you found it!
[9:38]  Tere Short: morocco looks very lively!
[9:38]  Boudica Jarvinen: Therewas the Boracy site where we did water sprts
[9:38]  Bascule Twine: I think it’s a good illustration of an environment that also teaches
[9:38]  Tere Short: i also have language lab as an option
[9:39]  Boudica Jarvinen: Is anyone doing the Sloodle site?
[9:39]  Bascule Twine: So – shall we get together again once activity 1 is finished and we’re ready to start activity 2 – the travel guide?
[9:39]  Boudica Jarvinen: ok
[9:39]  Tere Short: not me, sally
[9:39]  Bascule Twine: You could do Sloodle as well Sally – but it’s very technical I think
[9:40]  Boudica Jarvinen: not my forte ha ha
[9:40]  Bascule Twine: Very good thiugh!
[9:40]  Tere Short: lol. not mine either
[9:40]  Bascule Twine: (though)
